Advent, Day Twenty-one

Thursday, 19 December: And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, Luke 2:4

One of the continual choices God makes is to select the small, the weak and insignificant to play a meaningful role in His grand plan. Bethlehem, small and inconsequential, a cluster of stone and thatch dwellings on a ridge just south of Jerusalem, serves as the birthplace of King David and Immanuel. No one, present or past, boasts of being from Bethlehem. But Caesar decreed, Joseph obeyed and God smiled the satisfied smile of plan coming to fruition. Strands chosen, woven, and set in place centuries earlier coming together to form a sublime picture of love and choosing; God choosing to live as one of us.
