Advent, Day Fourteen

Thursday, 12 December: 18 And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” 19 And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.” Luke 1:18-20

When presented with an unbelievable choice, Zechariah chose unbelief and paid a price. God asks us to believe the unbelievable. After all, why would someone so powerful and mighty freely choose to not only love rebellious creatures but to also become one. To exchange power, might, and glory for weakness, dependence, and ignominy beggars belief. But that is what He did. All for a miserable wretch such as I. He asks me to believe in the advent of Jesus, His entry into my existence in order to reclaim that which was lost, me.
