June ‘Teenth
Today, we as a nation celebrate June ‘Teenth together for the first time. It has been a long time coming and is but one of the many steps we must take on our corporate journey towards a more just society. While no one living owned slaves, many of us have profited from a tacit system that has not, and sadly often still does not fully recognize the inherent rights of the individual. We must gird up our intellectual loins and take a bracing look in the mirror. Every generation must pick up the banner and join in the fight for a just society, one in which the individual is weighed not on the color of their skin, but instead on the quality of their character. So we celebrate June ‘Teenth joyfully and soberly; joyfully in the recognition of a bold step once taken and soberly in the realization of the bold steps left to take.
